dizziness
The causes of dizziness include issues with the inner ear, brain, autonomic nervous system, low blood pressure, anemia, low blood sugar, menopause, and dumping syndrome after stomach surgery. The most common cause is related to the inner ear, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s disease, and sudden sensorineural hearing loss. These typically cause a spinning sensation, but may also be accompanied by a feeling of lightheadedness or floating. The next most common cause is autonomic nervous system dysfunction. This type doesn’t involve spinning but rather a sensation of unsteadiness or lightheadedness, and it often occurs when standing up. In older adults, a frequent cause is drug-induced low blood pressure. This can happen when antihypertensive medications become too effective and lower blood pressure excessively.
